Cheers! It’s Friday – The Bub City Old Fashioned

We made it. We still have the work day ahead of us before we can officially cheers (or not, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere) but I won’t let that hold me back from telling you about a well-made old fashioned here in Chicago at Bub City. I’ve been to Bub City several times but for some reason, I had never ordered an old fashioned. Most occasions that have brought me to this establishment had more of a beer binge vibe associated with them. That is, until last Friday. I made a pit stop at Bub City prior to dinner reservations nearby and a cocktail was calling my name. There was an old fashioned on the menu, so I let the bartender do the honors of making my old fashioned Bub City style which was very simple (Very Old Barton Bourbon, demerara, bitters). It was poured over a nice big cube of ice with an orange peel and one maraschino cherry. No muddling. No weirdly flavored bitters. Just a classic old fashioned. It did not disappoint. A little sweeter than usual but delicious. I had originally planned to have just the one before dinner but that first one went down so smoothly and quickly that I had plenty of time for round 2. If not for dinner plans, a 3rd would’ve been very tempting. It’s probably for the best that this was avoided. If I had no other plans, 3 could’ve (would've) easily turned into 6+ which would’ve turned into the old fashioned hangover jitters Saturday morning. Overall, I was very pleased with the Old Fashioned at Bub City. Considering they have a pretty vast whiskey selection, maybe my expectations should have been higher. But also knowing that it’s a popular night life honky-tonk spot in River North, I figured it’d be a very average and uninspiring cocktail. I’m glad I was wrong. Ranking – 4.5/5 Cheers!
