The Top Fives (Super Bowl Edition)

Since the headline here is related to the Super Bowl, I’ll file this in the Sports section, but the Super Bowl to the majority of America is about a lot more than just sports. It’s not just a game, it’s an event. A lot of people out there who barely even understand football will tune in just to watch the commercials and half-time show. Super Bowl parties are filled with people who could care less who is playing. To them, it’s just a reason to get together with friends to eat and drink more than they should on a Sunday. While this coming Monday isn’t officially a corporate holiday, it unofficially will be to most men, who will need some time to shake off the buffalo chicken dip and case of bud light while also accepting the fact that football season is over. Here are my Super Bowl Top Five lists for the 21st century (I don’t remember enough from my pre-teen days to go back any further). The Top Five Super Bowl Snacks: Whether you’re going to a Super Bowl party, a bar, or just hanging at home, this is one evening each year that we’re allowed to eat like slobs. No actual dinner item is required. All you need is a plethora of your favorite appetizers. No limits. If you think you’ve already bought enough and you’re about to put back the taquitos back in the freezer, please stop and reconsider. It’s okay. Today, you get to have those taquitos and anything else you want. You can start your post-football season diet tomorrow. The key to me is variety. While these top 5 might not be my actual 5 favorite snacks, by going with a spread like this, you’ll be very satisfied with the breadth of categories you’ll be hitting. Without further ado,

# 1: Buffalo Chicken __________ (fill in the blank). I went with the fill in the blank strategy here, so I wouldn’t make this entire list a variety of buffalo chicken dishes (because I would have). The top choices for me would be Buffalo Chicken Dip and wings (bone-in preferably) but feel free to get creative here. I’ve done buffalo chicken crescent rolls, sliders, nachos, etc… When I’m having a bad hair day, sometimes I put a little buffalo chicken in it. # 2: Chili This is a very traditional choice and while it might not excite you, you can’t go wrong with having a big pot of chili. It’s easy to make. It’s cheap. It’s delicious. If anything was to be considered your main dish for the night, this is it. # 3: DIPS While there are so many amazing dips out there, if you are looking for a solid starting place, I suggest knocking out the Mexican cuisine here w/ salsa, queso, and guacamole. Homemade dips preferably. Don’t get lazy, at least not with the guac. Obviously, these need to be paired with some tortilla chips but while you’ve got that queso there, go ahead and warm up some soft pretzels. # 4: Potato Skins We can’t just leave out the taters. Today isn’t about being safe though with your taters. Load these skins up with bacon, cheese, sour cream, and plenty of butter. # 5: *WILD CARD* - Stromboli Rolls Last but certainly not least, the Stromboli roll will check the box for your Pizza dish. If you’re feeling lazy, sure, just order a pizza or calzone, but if you want to get some street cred at the party, whip up a few of these.  The Top Five Super Bowl Commercials #1 Reebok: Terry Tate – Office Linebacker (2003) "This is my world, you just work here"

#2 Snickers: Betty White (2010) Gotta love Betty

#3 Doritos: House Rules (2011) Little man setting expectations upfront. Respect.

#4 Budweiser: What are you doing (2001) “That is correct. That is correct”.

# 5 Chrysler: "Imported from Detroit" (2011) I’m from Detroit. Of course, this one got me a little hyped.

The Top Five Super Bowl Half Time Shows #1: Bruce Springsteen (2009) For those who know me, this probably isn’t a surprise. As a big Springsteen fan, I’m a little biased but let’s be real here. The Boss brought delivered one of the best half-time shows ever.

#2: Prince (2007) Purple Rain during a Super Bowl that included tons of rain. Beautiful combo.

#3: Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Simpson, Kid Rock, Nelly, and P. Diddy (2004) This was quite the lineup but the costume “malfunction” for Janet and the controversy around it makes this one stand out.

#4: U2 (2012) Bono with the powerful performance post 9/11

#5 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Not a flashy show but that’s not Tom Petty's style

The Top Five Super Bowl Games Let’s not forget what this day is really about. The top two NFL teams battling it out for the Lombardi Trophy. There have been some amazing games over the past 18 years (too many featuring New England). #1: Super Bowl LI / New England Patriots 34, Atlanta Falcons 28 (2017) It was just a couple years ago that we witnessed the biggest comeback/collapse in Super Bowl History

#2: Super Bowl XLIX / New England Patriots 28, Seattle Seahawks 24 / Glendale, Arizona (2015) JUST GIVE THE BALL TO LYNCH! One of the most memorable finishes to a game.

#3: Super Bowl XXXVI / New England Patriots 20, St. Louis Rams 17 (2002) The beginning of the Tom Brady dynasty

#4: Super Bowl XLII / New York Giants 17, New England Patriots 14 / Glendale, Arizona (2008) David Tyree with the helmet catch to shock the world and take down the undefeated Patriots

#5: Super Bowl XXXIV / St. Louis Rams 23, Tennessee Titans 16 / Atlanta (2000) The greatest show on turf vs. Steve McNair and Eddie George. The Rams get the huge stop right at the goal line to secure the W.

Good luck to everyone this year on their Super Bowl endeavors. Eat well and enjoy the show.
