Waste Management Phoenix Open – The Golf Spectacle

Writer: SmittySmitty

So, this past weekend I attended the WM Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona…All I have to say is it lived up to every bit of the hype I’ve heard about.  I’ve never had a desire to attend a golf tournament, since staying quiet and limiting my drinking is not how I like my sports spectating.  Luckily, the WMPO allows fans to go all out in both of those categories.  I knew the 16th hole was where the party is at but this event has grown so much that the 17th and 18th now have bleachers, clubs and rowdy crowds of their own.    Golf is definitely a second thought for what seemed like 75% of the crowd. It was more of an event - an all day tailgate type of feel, where socializing, drinking or taking in the many booths is the priority.  I deliberately watched maybe 30 minutes of players finishing at 18, but for the most part it was an afterthought.  The best part is the freedom to actually heckle the golfers or just yell obscene statements that would get you banned for life at Augusta.  Several of my favorites; telling Phil Michelson to “Dump Em Out,” (meaning flash you’re tits) or the “Big Dick Rick” chants for my boy, Rickie Fowler. Congrats to Rickie by the way. He tried his best to choke again with one of the unluckiest string of events I’ve seen in golf, but “ole big dick rick” found enough magic to secure a much deserved win. Overall, my experience was phenomenal, I was worried at first about attending a golf tourney even if it was the WMPO, and those worries dissipated as soon as I got there and had a beer in hand.  A gorgeous course that is impeccably clean (props to Waste Management for living up to the name). My advice: go to the early days of the tourney as there aren't as many people and you can get super close to the golfers. The absolute must is to get club wrist band at some kind of tent.  We got ones for $120, which overlooked the 18th green and gave you free food and 10 alcoholic drinks. Well worth it since you'll pay $10 minimum for drinks anywhere on the course.  After golf wraps up for the day, the Birds Nest wristband allows you to go to the concert series; which was another whole party in itself across the street.  We found our second wind with a few more tequila shots and watched Lee Brice kill it!  I cannot say the same for Jake Owen; not a fan of that performance.  So, if you like your golf with drinking, talking shit, and loud music this is a must attend.  I certainly will try to make it an annual trip, and have a better chance to do so since the wife actually had a great time, and she could give 2 shits about golf.
